The Dividend Scorecard: The Main Reason Dividend Investors Pay for Premium
Every dividend investor eventually learns the same lesson: a big yield means nothing if the dividend gets cut. The hard part is judging safety without spending a weekend inside 10-K filings. That's the problem Seeking Alpha's Dividend Scorecard is built to solve.
On each dividend stock's page, Premium members see four letter grades. Seeking Alpha says they update daily before the US market opens.
| Grade | What it measures | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| Dividend Safety | How likely the dividend is to be maintained, built from 13 metrics | The first thing to check before buying any high yielder |
| Dividend Growth | How fast and how steadily the dividend has been growing | Separates real compounders from flat payers |
| Dividend Yield | How the yield compares with similar companies | Spots yields that look too good for their sector |
| Dividend Consistency | The track record of paying and raising over time | Rewards the boring, reliable names income investors love |
๐ก How this connects to dividend ETFs
A fund like $SCHD, $VYM or $DGRO is only as strong as the companies inside it. Checking the Dividend Safety grade on a fund's top 10 holdings is a quick way to see whether its income is built on solid ground. Find the holdings on our SCHD holdings page or any ETF page, then grade them on Seeking Alpha.
ETF Grades: A Report Card for Every Dividend ETF
Premium also grades ETFs directly with five letter grades: Momentum, Expenses, Dividends, Risk and Asset Flows. Seeking Alpha says these are exclusive to Premium and PRO subscribers.
- Expenses is the one I'd look at first. Fees compound against you every single year, and income funds vary a lot here.
- Dividends grades the fund's distribution profile against similar ETFs.
- Risk shows how bumpy the ride has been, which matters a lot for covered call and option income funds like $JEPI, $JEPQ, $SPYI and $QQQI.
- Asset Flows tells you whether investors are piling in or leaving. Shrinking funds can close.
What ETF Grades won't show you is price decay, the slow loss of share value some high-yield funds suffer while they pay you. That's a core column on TopDividendETFs.com and inside the TopDividendETFsPRO terminal. Using both together gives you the full picture.
Grade any dividend stock or ETF in seconds
Dividend Scorecard, ETF Grades and Quant Ratings are all included with Seeking Alpha Premium. Free trials are often available for new members.
Try Seeking Alpha Premium โQuant Ratings and Factor Grades
Beyond dividends, every covered stock gets a Quant Rating from Strong Buy to Strong Sell, plus five Factor Grades: Value, Growth, Profitability, Momentum and EPS Revisions. Seeking Alpha has published Quant Rating data going back to 2010.
For dividend investors, Profitability and EPS Revisions are the two to watch. A company with shrinking profits and falling earnings estimates is often the one that cuts its dividend next year. The Quant Rating isn't a crystal ball, and it can change daily, but it's a useful second opinion before you add a new name.
A Simple Dividend Research Routine Using Premium
- Find candidates for free. Start with our Top 100 Dividend ETFs rankings or highest yield ETFs with no price decay.
- Check total return, not just yield. A fund that pays 12% but has lost value since launch may have made you less money than a 3% payer. Compare any two on ETFTotalReturns.com.
- Grade the fund. Pull up the ETF on Seeking Alpha and check Expenses, Dividends and Risk.
- Grade what's inside. Run the top holdings through the Dividend Scorecard. A fund full of D-rated Safety scores is a warning sign.
- Read both sides. Premium unlocks unlimited articles, including bearish ones. Read at least one before you buy.
- Model the income. Plug your numbers into DividendProjection.com to see what the portfolio could pay over time.
Downsides Worth Knowing Before You Subscribe
- It's an annual plan. Premium is generally billed yearly, and first-year discounts renew at the list price. Put your renewal date on the calendar.
- Contributor quality varies. Thousands of authors publish on Seeking Alpha. Treat articles as ideas to verify, not instructions.
- Grades are backward-looking. A great Safety grade today doesn't guarantee the next dividend. Companies can and do cut.
- It can be overwhelming. There's a lot of data. If you only need yield and total return, free tools are faster.
- No price decay tracking. For high-yield and option income ETFs, you'll still want our price decay data alongside it.

Verdict: Is Seeking Alpha Premium Worth It for Dividend Investors?
For anyone who buys individual dividend stocks, or wants to know whether the companies inside their dividend ETFs are actually healthy, yes. The Dividend Scorecard and ETF Grades put the most important checks in one place, and at the list price it works out to well under a dollar a day.
For investors who only hold a couple of broad funds and rebalance once a year, it's a nice-to-have, not a must. Our free rankings, plus TopDividendETFsPRO for deeper ETF screening, will cover most of what you need.
